Will Hindutva take center stage in 2019 Lok Sabha elections?
The largest democracy in the world is again about to enter in the process of elections for choosing it’s Prime Minister and the ruling party. Every party in the country is busy preparing itself for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections which are coming up soon. The candidate for the two leading parties are clear, it will be Narendra Modi versus Rahul Gandhi. This is the first time Rahul Gandhi has openly portrayed his wish to become the Prime Minister.
Hindutva has become a major topic since the rise of Bhartiya Janta Party in 2014. Many believe that Hindutva will take the center stage in the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections. Congress has suffered a major loss by portraying itself as a pro-Muslim party, this time it is trying its best to shrug off this image.
If anyone thinks that the elections will be fought over the issues which affect the general public that they need to think again. It can be seen that even the parties have chosen the Gods that are going to represent them in the 2019 elections. Yet again it will be Lord Ram for BJP, Lord Vishnu for Samajwadi party and Lord Shiv for Congress. The other states parties are also not shy of drumming the names of Gods to gather the support of the masses. Even the Bahujan Samaj Party is trying to portray itself more than just being a Dalit party, they are trying desperately to change their clinched image.
So this time unlike in the 2014 elections it’s not just BJP that is taking up the saffron color but all the other major parties which are important for the 2019 elections seem to be sharpening their armory with Hindutva in varying degrees. It won’t be right to say all the parties like BJP are trying to become a full-fledged Hindu party but they all definitely wish to remove their pro-Muslim image and gather the votes of the majority by doing so.
BJP has once again taken up the topic of reconstruction of the Ram Mandir and the RSS with its affiliates like the VHP have started working to making sure that the wave of Hinduism is repeated again in 2019.
On the other hand, Congress in its efforts to shrug off its pro-Muslim image is trying hard to portray Rahul Gandhi as a devotee of Lord Shiva. He has been visiting a lot of temples recently and the party workers are giving him the tag of being a ‘Shiv Bhakt’ after his return from Kailash Mansarovar. Recently during his visit to his Amethi constituency, he was welcomed with posters showing him as a Shiv Bhakt. Pro Hinduism slogans can be heard from different party members all around the country.
There are no second thoughts that Hindutva is going to play a crucial role in the upcoming elections. All the parties will try to get the support of the majority and replicate what BJP had done in 2014. However, it will be quite amusing how it turns out for the parties and how the minorities especially the Muslim community reacts to these steps.
